<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: yellow;">It is obvious to me that from
the first two chapters what you have here is an extremely well researched tome.
It shows the passion of the writer, Christian Wheeldon, for his subject's work.
That this passion is equally shared by thousands of fans all over the world
almost guarantees that this new book will fulfil many sales. From early days
through the emerging german underground music scene and beyond through the
techno age and ambient, Manuel is now being recognised as one of the fathers of
techno dance music, mainly through his influential album </span></i><span style="color: yellow;">E2-E4<i>. It's
this very same album that Manuel is recreating at Hebden Bridge Picture House
later this year. Details to be announced soon we hope. In the meantime buy the
book, limited edition only. It's a superb slice of musical history, the very
presence of it is almost miraculous in itself!</i> </span><span style="color: orange;">(Paul)

believe me I have read a million music bios. This one is of extremely high

in music bios and the research is high quality. One can feel everything has
been researched as far as one could. What happened to Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser, I beg

<i><span style="color: yellow;">I just received the book this afternoon. I took it with me and went in a park and in the shadow of a tree I began the reading.</span></i><br />
<i><span style="color: yellow;"><br /></span></i>
<i><span style="color: yellow;">It looks very, very interesting. I only read the introduction and chapter one
but it's reading like a novel where you want to know what is following. In the
first pages you talk about "man on the moon" during summer '69. It
means something to me: at that very same time I was hitchhiking in Germany and
the driver tried to explain me that event (but he wasn't speaking French nor
English), but at last I understood. I was going to...Berlin!</span></i><br />
<i><span style="color: yellow;"><br /></span></i>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hi there. Here's another progress report regarding my forthcoming Manuel Göttsching
book and a few words from a fellow music writer. There are a total of
15 chapters and Stephen Iliffe, who is currently proofreading the text
(and is now deep into chapter 12), has this to say: "This is going to be
the ideal guide to Manuel's life and music. I've already purchased an
additional three albums of his as a result of reading it, which is
exactly what a good music book should do, and it has deepened my
appreciation of the Manuel Göttsching and Ashra albums that I already own."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Given that Stephen's Hans-Joachim Roedelius biography, <i>Painting with Sound</i>
is one of the finest books I have ever read I'm very heartened by his
words. I'm also very grateful indeed for his work with the proofing. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I will let you know when this process is complete as we head towards the finish line. Stay tuned.</div>

Hi everyone. I'm busy working on the final stages of the book. Today I'm sending the photographs with credits to the graphic designer over in Australia. The reference section is checked and complete and the finish line really doesn't seem so far away now.</div>

In the meantime here's a cool clip of Walter Wegmuller, presenting some of his art. Enjoy! More soon. <br />

It has been a while so here is an update on my Manuel G<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>
<o:OfficeDocumentSettings>
<o:AllowPNG/>
</o:OfficeDocumentSettings>
</xml><![endif]--><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">ö</span>ttsching book in progress. We are all systems go and approaching a finished product. Over the last few weeks I have been busy checking that all of the names in the book (whether those belonging to people, places or pieces of music) are correct. Soon I will be doing the same with all of the dates. I have just completed the references section and this afternoon I will be double checking that this is all correct. In the meantime my good friend Stephen Iliffe (Hans-Joachim Roedelius biographer and CD sleeve note writer extraordinaire) is proofreading my draft chapter by chapter at a rate of knots, as and when time allows. Thank you, Stephen!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Whilst all of this is going on I have enlisted the services of a graphic designer for the cover and all of the layout. Believe it or not he lives in Australia (thank goodness for e-mail communication). His work is excellent and I look forward to sharing it with you when it is available. The link with this graphic designer was forged by a mega Manuel G<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">ö</span>ttsching fan, who fortuitously also happens to be a book publisher. While my book doesn't fall within the genre categories that his inprint deals with he has been incredibly helpful in linking me with the aforementioned contact but also with organising links to printers that I will need to get the book self-published. Thank you also, Robert!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When everything is checked and the layout is complete and spot on I will probably be setting up a Kickstarter account with a view to funding a limited print run of the book. You will be able to see the cover art, perhaps a few sample pages and bag yourself a copy by pre-ordering. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There have been a few slow laps along the way but I can promise you that this is the last one. After what I can honestly tell you amounts to well over five years of writing during weekends and holidays Manuel G<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">ö</span>ttsching book is almost there and I'm getting rather excited about it. If I had to predict when you will be able to get your mitts on it I'd say the final quarter of this year. I'm moving house soon, which may slow things slightly for a month or two but this is almost there. Coming soon...</div>

He has a draft of the book and is currently reading this whenever time allows in between his various projects. More news will appear as and when I get it. Thanks, MG!</div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">I now hand over </span>to two friends, both of whom had the great pleasure of attending Manuel's live show at the Oval Space in London last Thursday night (5th September 2013). One of the warmest nights of the year heralded Manuel Gottsching's return to London and what a triumphant return it was!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
I have been a devotee of Gottsching's music since being introduced to <i>Blackouts</i> by my old friend, Tony Bell, back in 1978, who, happily, joined me for the Oval show. <i>New Age of Earth</i> followed and I was hooked. But, having missed the Ash Ra Tempel performance in London in 2000 (for which I remain bitterly disappointed), it was not until going to Scotland in the starkly different climate of December 2010 that I finally had the opportunity to see the man play in the intimate, subterranean atmosphere of the Stereo bar in Glasgow. For Tony, London was his first such occasion: 'I've waited 30 years for this...' he remarked, smiling, as we left the bar and headed towards the 'Space'.

London was to be different, but equally impressive. First opening in April 2012, the Oval Space, on the eastern fringes of the capital, offers a much larger venue and defines itself as an 'evolving multi-use arts and events space in the heart of Bethnal Green'. <br />
<br />
Following an impressive and inventive deep house set by fellow Germans, Henrik Schwarz and Frank Wiedemann, a little after ten p.m., the lights darkened and the 'Space' filled with around 400 music fans. Up front, very close to the stage and looking around me at the faces in the red glow of the lights, one could detect an air of excitement and anticipation. It was evident that some knew what to expect and some didn't.<br />
<br />
Manuel Gottsching stepped up to the stage, unannounced, and the place erupted. Gottsching bowed and took his seat, leaned over his laptop and went to work. His area of the stage was spartan: aside from his 'desk', there was a Novation X-Station 49 keyboard and a Gibson SG. The 'Space' was slowly consumed with the pulsing, almost forbidding opening beats of 'Big Birds' - a piece he first played in Berlin in 1979 and which I had not previously heard. For me, it was wonderful to hear MG-ART music that did I not have in my collection and it made the evening even more stimulating. I sensed the audience too, perhaps many for the first time, found it spell-binding. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDi8NXferxG2bBlmEZxrE39Fw9eHyt0PSXRPgEWItMFhilcp52tpjHozMbqosYWv2eCULUqLvsJzcGHjOask49vwIXw2ULrZNXvuM3dtCmox5fAH_YzuHI1DpOm_2FxsdVcxWEnqIVYVz9/s1600/MG+live+6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDi8NXferxG2bBlmEZxrE39Fw9eHyt0PSXRPgEWItMFhilcp52tpjHozMbqosYWv2eCULUqLvsJzcGHjOask49vwIXw2ULrZNXvuM3dtCmox5fAH_YzuHI1DpOm_2FxsdVcxWEnqIVYVz9/s320/MG+live+6.JPG" width="303" /></a></div>
Up next, a smiling, but perhaps slightly overwhelmed Gottsching introduced 'Shuttlecock', and judging by the reaction, it was clearly a favourite with many of the Italian fans who happened to be present. It was a superb rendition - vibrant and fresh, with a rich and contemporary edge to it that really pleased the crowd. Then, for me the highlight of the evening came, with a truly memorable and extended performance of 'Midnight on Mars' in which Gottsching played the guitar exquisitely. By this stage, many of the club scene audience in attendance were dancing and soaking up something that was truly special and sublime.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrwjGm-ICblTJQ9PIy5XxIYmWExSrRFnOAU6TWwq0E4trJOAr2yFEI2vVANKmHwYZnPohob_TpnUi8i8dnpTRV-jart0gFRZ-IzkyQmOgHIJEcKbCJbRbZMAVjRLALxSRLmTGDMyZugRmg/s1600/MG+live+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrwjGm-ICblTJQ9PIy5XxIYmWExSrRFnOAU6TWwq0E4trJOAr2yFEI2vVANKmHwYZnPohob_TpnUi8i8dnpTRV-jart0gFRZ-IzkyQmOgHIJEcKbCJbRbZMAVjRLALxSRLmTGDMyZugRmg/s320/MG+live+5.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Gottsching then offered his thanks and added how good it was to be back in London, a place that he did not visit perhaps as much as he should, but which, he commented, had nevertheless played an important part in his career. Tonight was about looking back on that career and playing some 'old pieces and some new pieces'.<br />
<br />
Then it was 'Trunky Groove' - a rumbling, mesmerising 'groove' that just seemed 'right' for the majority of the audience. This is Gottsching's key. Invention, adaptability, re-invention, timelessness. Loud applause. Finally his 90-minute set ended with a new synthesiser/guitar piece, whose title escaped me in the noise of the crowd, but which I truly hope may appear on a future recording.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghLrJsEm7fHzAYtEk9GXcC2Mj7PYdrpcW0Ia1x7RVYFCjlfocfN2er5ejplQrqmafzxirVrdW6K879unawztlLustDOUXhwHXcmuK6uSPKlv1e6LTXKgrJB1YUiTgxrXrdNcBFTZOYY0BN/s1600/MG+live+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghLrJsEm7fHzAYtEk9GXcC2Mj7PYdrpcW0Ia1x7RVYFCjlfocfN2er5ejplQrqmafzxirVrdW6K879unawztlLustDOUXhwHXcmuK6uSPKlv1e6LTXKgrJB1YUiTgxrXrdNcBFTZOYY0BN/s320/MG+live+4.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Manuel Gottsching bowed, smiled, waved and left the stage. I caught him above the heads of the crowd being whisked off through a side door. He left with a backward glance, another smile and another wave. Gone, but hopefully he'll be back a'fore long.<br />
<br />
'Wow...', breathed Tony. Thirty years and it was worth every minute.'<br />
<br />
I'll second that.</div>

I would love to be at the show but as my wife and I are busy saving for a house right now the trek to Berlin isn't going to be possible this time. However, I was at Ashra's show at UFA last summer and all I can say is if you have a chance to see the band live do it. They are superb! </div>

In other news the book is currently being proofread by a friend before I start exploring publication options. Will it be available as a traditional paper book or an e-book of some description? I'm not entirely sure yet. It all depends on what opportunities are out there. We shall see. Before I sent the book to my friend I neatened it up and in doing this decided to trim down the section about the making of the Ashra album <em>Correlations</em> a little, as I felt it was too long. As a way of thanking you for patiently waiting for the blog to be updated I'm including a section that has been cut out of the book below. This is about <em>Phantasus</em>, an early version of what became <em>Correlations</em>. Admittedly this is only going to appeal to the hardcore fan of Manuel Göttsching/Ashra but I know there are plenty of you out there. Hope you enjoy! More news on the book soon, I promise!</div>

<strong>Ashra – <em>Phantasus</em> (Recorded: 1978 Released: 2008)</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Having produced three solo albums in as many years, with the only diversions coming in the form of projects working as a part of a duo, it is perhaps of little surprise that being part of a band again would require a short period of acclimatisation for Manuel Göttsching. <em>Phantasus</em>, an early, shelved mix of <em>Correlations</em>, finally released from the archive 30 years after it was recorded, is clearly the result of this period of transition. In an interview during the same period as the release of the <em>Correlations Complete</em> boxed set, Göttsching stated: “I got the idea of including the first mix we had made, so it's the same titles, but they sound different, more spacey, more reverb and guitars, like an electronic band that uses rock elements, while the Virgin release sounds like a rock band that uses electronic sounds.” </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Essentially this sums up the differences between <em>Phantasus</em> and the subsequent mixes of the tracks that grace the <em>Correlations</em> album. The former tends to suggest a collection of recordings from the period of the Berlin School with musicians brought in to augment solo ideas, whilst the latter generally backgrounds sequencer patterns, allowing for the more expansive sounds of a band playing together. Lutz Ulbrich and Harald Grosskopf are in the picture with the <em>Phantasus</em> mixes, albeit far less prominently than they would be by the time the <em>Correlations</em> project was complete. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In its original mix <em>Ice Train</em> opens with a bleeping sequencer pattern and features a far more conservative drum track than that which would later be re-recorded. The <em>Phantasus</em> version seems to place the emphasis on Grosskopf’s bass drum work rather than the rest of his kit, the rhythms modestly blending with the pulsing electronics. The later <em>Correlations</em> version, on the other hand, veers much closer to a rock sound, emphasising the sounds of a full kit. Bubbling electronic sounds, recalling the cosmic elements of <em>New Age of Earth</em> and <em>Blackouts</em> would be taken out of the mix by the time a second version was completed in favour of chilly Mellotron string sounds and some slashing, staccato rhythm guitar work. With a running time extended by two minutes the <em>Correlations</em> opener is more of a showcase for a band performance whilst the end of the track ratchets up the tension considerably, with favourable results. <em>Phantasus</em> presents a fascinating glimpse of an alternate work that was once considered the finished product and this version of <em>Ice Train</em> now seems like a work in progress - a stepping-stone on the way towards the completed piece. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The title track of the <em>Phantasus</em> album, ultimately selected as the <em>Correlations</em> closer appears as the second offering here. The sound is denser and the instruments are clustered together more closely than they would be after Mick Glossop’s spacious mix and whilst the running time is a minute longer than it would be in the version pressed to vinyl in 1979 this track seems to have undergone less obvious changes than the bulk of the other material. The same can be said of <em>Bamboo Sands</em>, which features one alternate guitar part during the solo section but is otherwise instrumentally similar to the second version, even if the sound levels of the mix differ. <em>Springtime</em> (later retitled as <em>Oasis</em> for <em>Correlations</em>) simply differs because it has an alternate, more prominent electronic rhythm than the finished Virgin version.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In its first incarnation <em>Club Cannibal</em> is introduced by high register synthesiser parts, with the rhythm guitar taking a little longer to kick in than is the case with the <em>Correlations</em> version. The tempo on the <em>Phantasus</em> mix is noticeably slower than that on the <em>Correlations</em> cut and the earlier mix lacks the autumnal Mellotron string voice, the clever trickling torrent of electronic sounds and most notably the heavy synth bass that would feature in the later redux effort. This is one of the more obviously reworked tracks and whilst the ideas here are not as developed as they would subsequently be the slower tempo provides a powerful alternative to the Virgin Records release. The first mix of <em>Morgana da Capo</em> is also devoid of the Mellotron string sounds that would be selected for inclusion by the end of the Mick Glossop sessions. With less reverb applied to the drum track and guitars a little further back in the mix than they would be on the glossy, and at times soft focus <em>Correlations</em> album, this earlier version seems a little closer to the style of Göttsching’s previous solo albums.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<em>Phantasus</em> closes with the penultimate <em>Correlations</em> track <em>Pas de Trois</em>. The tempo here is slightly faster than that with which many Ashra fans will be accustomed. In this early mix the sequencer appears to be foregrounded, once again serving to emphasise the electronic Berlin School elements of the music. In placing an increased focus on rhythm guitars and bongos, some of which appear to have been added to the mix during the Mick Glossop sessions, the <em>Correlations</em> cut would further emphasise the African elements of the music. On the evidence presented by the <em>Phantasus</em> version, the drum track and solo guitar work also appear to have later been re-recorded with the dramatic waves of synthesiser sound during the closing moments replaced by jangly, melodic guitar. <em>Pas de Trois</em> is one of the tracks that would be most radically remixed during Glossop’s time with the band.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hi all. Whilst I await the completion and publication of my Manuel Gottsching book I have set up a brand new blog as a tribute to the ambient/electronic musician and Fax Records owner Pete Namlook. You can access it <a href="http://nmlkfax.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">here</a>. I should point out that this is an entirely fresh project and there is no overlap whatsoever between this and my book about MG.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
A Merry Christmas to one and all! Hope you've had a good year and I hope the next one is better still. <br />
<br />
I've just been looking back over the 2012 blog entries and they reminded me I've had a truly fantastic 12 months. It only seems like a few days since I posted the photos taken on the beach in Whitley Bay on New Year's Day. In 2012 I visited New York for the first time (and was blown away), received wonderful contributions to the book by Gong and System 7 man Steve Hillage, Alex Paterson of The Orb and Agitation Free founder member Lutz Ludwig Kramer. I also got to see Ashra live in Berlin, visited Manuel's amazing Studio Roma and met Lutz Ulbrich before seeing Agitation Free live in London. I saw an incredible shooting star burning up in the sky that made the BBC national news the next day and celebrated a fourth anniversary since I started writing the book. On a sadder note this year we lost Fax Records owner and ambient/electronic music genius Pete Namlook. I had a bit of correspondence with Pete when buying his CDs and he was a lovely man. He may be gone but his music will live on.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, what of 2013, then? Well, we have Manuel's new DVD release, recorded live at Transmediale with the spectacular Joshua Light Show to look forward to and I'm rather hoping that this will be the year when you get to read my book. It is pretty much finished (with the exception of whatever minor alterations the publisher may wish to make) and it is currently in a waiting list to be checked out. Coming soon is all I can tell you. Thank you all for following my blog and not losing patience if you're still tuned in. I'll be back in 2013, hopefully offering some exciting developments in the not-too-distant future! Have a great holiday and take care until then.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well, this weekend I travelled down to London to see Agitation Free live at the Jazz Cafe and they put on a tremendous show, playing a mixture of vintage and new material similar to the tracklisting of their recent live CD <em>Shibuya Nights, </em>albeit with some added stretches of ambient music and the surprise encore of Pink Floyd's <em>Interstellar Overdrive</em>. Great stuff!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It has taken four years but I finally managed to buy Lutz Ulbrich a pint as a way of saying thank you for all of his help with my MG book. He's a very nice chap. Shame he had to stand with some hairy bloke for the photo above (which appears courtesy of Mr. Stephen Iliffe). A splendid weekend was had by all!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The legendary Agitation Free have two live UK dates coming soon. On Friday 9th November they will be playing at Moho Live in Manchester, supported by a DJ set from the <a href="http://wasistdas.co.uk/" target="_blank">Was Ist Das</a> sound system and on Saturday 10th November they will also be playing at London's Jazz Cafe.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a chance to see the very same line-up that recorded the <i><a href="http://www.allmusic.com/album/malesch-mw0000465794" target="_blank">Malesch</a></i> and <i><a href="http://www.allmusic.com/album/2nd-mw0000457622" target="_blank">2nd</a></i> albums back in the early '70s. If you haven't heard Agitation Free with their blend of melodic jamming rock and electronics then you're in for a treat and I can't recommend them highly enough. Their latest album, <i>Shibuya Nights</i>, which was recorded live in Tokyo in 2007 demonstrates that the band are every bit as exciting as they ever were, offering up a mixture of their vintage sound with some more contemporary moments. It all sits together very well indeed.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Of course it goes without saying that this is also an opportunity to see Manuel Gottsching collaborator and rock legend Lutz Ulbrich live on stage. Not to be missed! Tickets for both of the shows can be bought <a href="http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/search?tm_link=tm_header_search&user_input=&q=agitation+free&search.x=35&search.y=10" target="_blank">here</a>. <div style="text-align: justify;">
Hello readers. I thought I should check in and say hello in case any of you think my project has ground to a shuddering halt. Not the case at all! This morning I finally finished a skeleton index for the book (I call it this because it contains all of the keywords but not the accompanying page numbers - these will inevitably change when the book goes to a publisher). A citation section is also complete but I want to double check this for accuracy and I've also been adding some anecdotes and making amendments based on information I learnt on my trip to Berlin in June.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've had some highly encouraging feedback from the people in the process of checking the book (can't disclose any specific information right now) but they have very busy lives and several projects currently under development. No matter. I have been assured that they will be back in touch when they have had sufficient time to read my draft carefully.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, it's all about patience. Please continue to tune in, folks. I actually think that not having to rush things at this point is probably a positive thing, as it allows me to check, to fine tune and to add additional material that will make the finished product slightly better.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We shall arrive and you will be able to read. It just takes time...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Three fascinating clips featuring Ashra circa 1981 have appeared on YouTube, all of which were originally broadcast by the Barcelona-based television channel TVE as part of their show Music Express. The first two are live performances, both recorded in March. Ashra play <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-geUzgcbtUQ&feature=relmfu" target="_blank">alone</a> and then join the Spanish band Neuronium for a lengthy <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMdRDi_9gzw&feature=relmfu" target="_blank">jam</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb_OyLqt9jFB91-qS_fpMDPe8f1xk1Ghec838mAgDYLNFYtKg7zlhBEw-eMKKgddQhOc_Un8Ut_a5R0bhCIyaZ8qqcbEuWkR5mgL4sabJJ1NyIKO5ZwkhrSpMIKVZr2IFg-eOUfZQu677g/s1600/Ashra+1981+2.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hea="true" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb_OyLqt9jFB91-qS_fpMDPe8f1xk1Ghec838mAgDYLNFYtKg7zlhBEw-eMKKgddQhOc_Un8Ut_a5R0bhCIyaZ8qqcbEuWkR5mgL4sabJJ1NyIKO5ZwkhrSpMIKVZr2IFg-eOUfZQu677g/s400/Ashra+1981+2.bmp" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another clip, recorded a month later, shows the band being <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax654mqawnc&feature=relmfu" target="_blank">interviewed</a> in Berlin. The audible language for all of this (some of which is overdubbed) is Spanish. Perfect for Spanish speakers but for everyone else the visuals are very interesting in their own right. The band can be seen playing and chatting in Manuel's Studio Roma and shortly after this they would all go their own way for four years. Manuel's <em>E2-E4</em> was just around the corner...<br />

Thank you to Marco for posting these.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Greetings all. I'm doing my bit for the Scottish Tourist Board here by sharing some of my photos from my visit to the Isle of Arran last week. Arran is off the west coast of Scotland and is separated from the Hebrides by the Kintyre peninsula. </div>

These photographs were taken during a walk at Drummadoon. King's Cave, located nearby, is thought to be the place where Robert the Bruce hid after suffering defeat in a battle with the English (this probably happened in 1306). After seeing a spider repeatedly failing but eventually succeeding to spin a web in the entrance of the cave he found renewed inspiration to fight again.</div>

Across the water in the photograph below you can see Kintyre in the distance. In the early '70s after the break-up of The Beatles Paul McCartney came here to escape the media spotlight. It also later inspired his famous single.</div>

Before I go the news re: the book is that it is still being checked on the run-up to publication (although not by myself). I'm not able to say too much about this yet but stay tuned and all will be revealed in due course! Thanks for your patience and for following the blog. More soon...</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let's go back through the mists of time...about 22 years, actually. Way back then a new show appeared on the British TV station Channel 4 and it was called <em>Vic Reeves Big Night Out</em>. A teenager at the time, I watched it once or twice and couldn't fathom out how these guys had managed to get on television. Basically the big night out seemed to entail Vic Reeves, Bob Mortimer and Les (pictured above in the background) doing a series of extremely strange things. Les played his Bontempi organ, dressed as a doctor, whilst staring into space, there was a man in a paper helmet, holding a stick with random items on the end of it, The Ponderers were two characters with fake chins, wearing underpants, Greg Mitchell was a talking puppet Labrador dog and Wavey Davey...well, he simply enjoyed waving at people. Morrisey, The Consumer Monkey, offered advice about substandard products and Judge Nutmeg span his utterly ineffective Wheel of Justice during every episode. I think you get the picture...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At some point when watching the third or fourth epsiode of the programme the penny finally dropped: in a life full of order and rules this was total and utter anarchy...or at least it seemed that way...and it was both glorious and hilarious! As <em>Vic Reeves Big Night Out</em> caught on it became essential viewing for students and many young people in general. This was a Monty Python for our generation and we loved it! The catchphrases from the show could be heard everywhere for years.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, imagine my surprise when I heard that the music of Ash Ra Tempel would be included in the first episode of Vic and Bob's new Channel 4 show, <em>Lucky Sexy Winners</em>. Indeed <em>Traummaschine</em> featured in a sketch on Thursday night's programme which you can watch <a href="http://www.channel4.com/programmes/vic-bobs-lucky-sexy-winners/4od" target="_blank">here</a> for the next 28 days (select episode 1).</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The sketch involved Bloy, Estonia's X Factor Winners, and, as you can see from these pictures, it was very interesting indeed. Incidentally I apologise to any blog readers from Estonia, as I very much doubt you've seen anything like this before...or will again.</div>
